In the 60’s, the television music festivals played an important part in
the disclosure of artists at the beginning of their careers. In a period
where MPB’s inventiveness and fertility were rife, they were the place
in which the public was made aware of great public names such as Chico
Buarque, Caetano, Gil, Milton Nascimento, Elis Regina, Gal Costa and many
others.
The TV Excelsior ones, in São Paulo, the first to have them, were in 1965 (with "Arrastão", by Edu Lobo and Vinicius de Moraes, with Elis singing, coming in first place) and 1966. But the most important ones were the TV Record ones, also in São Paulo.
The first, in 1966, was a tied win by "A banda"(The band), by Chico Buarque, with him and Nara Leão singing, and "Disparada"(The plunge), by Geraldo Vandré and Teo de Barros, with Jair Rodrigues singing. The second, in 1967, the most significant of all of them, revealed Gil once and for all (with "Domingo no parque", second place) and Caetano (with "Alegria, alegria", fourth place), apart from awarding first prize to Edu Lobo and Capinan (with "Ponteio") and Chico Buarque (with "Roda viva") in third. In 1968, the winner was "São Paulo, meu amor"(São Paulo, my love), by ??? and with Tom Zé singing, and in third place "Divino maravilhoso"(Divinely marvelous), by Caetano and Gil, with Gal singing. The last, in 1969, was won by "Sinal fechado"(Red light), by ??? and with Paulinho da Viola singing.
In Rio de Janeiro, TV Rio, in 1966, and TV Globo, from 1967 to 1972, promoted the FIC - International Music Festival. Among the main songs awarded prizes by the event were: "Travessia"(The crossing), by Milton and Fernando Brant, second place in 1967; "Sabiá", by Chico and Tom Jobim, and "Pra não dizer que não falei de flores (Caminhando)"(Not to say that I didn’t speak of flowers (walking)), by Vandré, respectively winner and second place in 1968; and "Fio Maravilha", by Jorge Ben, the winner in 1972.
